Yes, and you must have an Alaska Drivers License.

How does the process work?

CDL Training Process Overview

Once you’ve registered and paid the tuition, you’ll receive login credentials to access the online Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) course. This federally mandated program is required for anyone pursuing a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) who did not obtain their CDL prior to 2022. The course is entirely self-led and self-paced, allowing you to progress on your own schedule.

📘 CDL Knowledge Requirements

Class A CDL Candidates must pass:
- Commercial General Knowledge Test
- Air Brakes Test
- Combination Vehicle Test

Class B CDL Candidates must pass:
- Commercial General Knowledge Test
- Air Brakes Test

Once you feel confident in your ability to pass these exams, you should complete your DOT physical (if applicable) and proceed to take the tests to earn your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP).

🚛 Hands-On Training Phase

After obtaining your CLP, you’ll begin:

Behind-the-wheel training
Skills development
Pre-trip inspection requirements

You may continue working through the ELDT course during this phase.

✅ Final Steps to Certification

To qualify for the final CDL test, you must:

Complete the ELDT course with a score of 80% or higher
Successfully finish all hands-on training
Demonstrate proficiency in pre-trip inspections to the State of Alaska and FMCSA standards

Once these requirements are met, you’ll be eligible to take the behind-the-wheel exam. Upon passing, you can head to the DMV to officially receive your CDL.

Does everyone have to get a DOT physical?

No. However, you can determine your eligibility and complete the CDL self-certification process by visiting the Division of Motor Vehicles, State of Alaska website. Do I need a Commercial Learners Permit?

To start behind-the-wheel training you are required to have a valid commercial learners permit in the class of license you wish to train in issued by the Alaska DMV.

If a DOT physical is needed is it covered by the tuition?

No. The DOT physical will be the student’s responsibility.

Do I need a new commedrcial learners permit going from a Class B to a Class A license?

✅ Upgrading from a Class B to a Class A CDL

If you currently hold a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and wish to upgrade to a Class A license, here’s what you need to know:

Obtain a CLP: You must first apply for a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) specific to Class A vehicles.

Air Brakes Endorsement:
- If you already have the Air Brakes endorsement, you’ll need to take and pass the Combination Vehicle knowledge test.
- If you do not have the Air Brakes endorsement, you must pass the Air Brakes test before a Class A CLP can be issued.

Training on slippery winter roads?

At Delta Driving Academy, our mission is to prepare every student to become a safe, responsible, and conscientious driver.

To uphold the highest safety standards for both our students and the community, we do not conduct training on icy roads during the initial phase of instruction. Mastery of basic commercial vehicle handling must come first. Once students demonstrate confidence and competence in core driving skills, they may pursue advanced training for challenging conditions such as icy or hazardous roads.

Are there programs out there to help with my tuition cost?

Yes. You can inquire about different Grant options depending on your qualifications. In addition we are working with the Delta Career Advancement Center.
